3 Keys to Effective One-on-One Meetings

One-on-one meetings are a great way for supervisors to better understand what’s happening with their team. As a direct report, here are three things you should do in these meetings:

1. Explain your accomplishments.

Compile your recent accomplishments into one document and use it to explain how your accomplishments add value based on company and team goals. The document basically explains why you’re valuable. Not having any accomplishments to speak of during the meeting may signal that you’re not getting things done. You should always be ready to talk about how you add value.

2. Ask for help.

If you’re having trouble completing a task, let your supervisor know. They may be able to offer advice, or even assist in removing the obstacle. Your supervisor may have dealt with a similar issue or know someone who can help you out.

3. Talk about your career

One-on-one meetings should just be filled with status updates. You should also discuss your career aspirations. During this point of the meeting, feel free to ask for work that’s aligned with your career goals. If you’re looking to get into project management, ask for project work.
